A theme is a set of fonts, colors, effects, and spacing options that are applied to your existing styles. This lesson will show you how to create a document theme and how to apply a theme to your document.

You can give your documents a consistent look by applying a theme. A theme is a set of fonts, colors, effects, and spacing options that are applied to your existing styles.

Create a Theme

Let’s first create our own theme.

  1. Click the Design tab.

  2. Click the Colors button.

  3. Select a set of colors.

    Select the Blue Warm colors.

    Next we’ll change the fonts.

  1. Click the Font button.

  2. Select a font.

    Select the Arial font set.

  1. Click the Themes button.

    Themes also save thew paragraph spacing and effects, but this looks good like it is, so click themes.

  2. Click Save Current Theme.

  1. Type a name for your theme and click Save.

  1. Click the Themes button.

    Your theme is saved in the custom group and is available to use in all your documents.

Apply a Document Theme

If you don’t want to create your own theme, Word has some built-in ones that you can use.

Still on the Design tab.

  1. Click the Themes button.

    Expand the Themes menu.

  2. Select a Theme.

    Select a built in theme. Let’s try Ion.

    The theme is applied, so the colors, fonts, and formatting of the document are changed.
